In comparison with other cities of the “Golden Ring” of Russia, Ivanovo is a very young city, it has not even turned one and a half hundred years. However, Ivanovo is not included in the list of the most famous places by chance. There are many architectural monuments of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, and there are even more ancient buildings, for example, the Shchudrovskaya tent (17th century). In addition, several original constructivist-style buildings erected in the 1920s and 1930s have survived in Ivanovo.

How the city was created

The village of Ivanovo has been known since the middle of the 16th century. Local linen and printed fabrics have long enjoyed great popularity. They were eagerly bought in Russia and abroad.

Transfiguration Cathedral

Ivanovo manufactories experienced a stormy period of development after the Patriotic War of 1812. The Moscow factories were destroyed during the fires, and the demand for cloth in the post-war years increased greatly. This was the main reason that the Ivanovo print and sewing industries began to grow, and the countryside began to grow richer.

In the 19th century, a new settlement appeared near Ivanovo - Voznesensky Posad. Their merger into a single city took place in 1871, and this city received its modern name in 1932.

Holy Vvedensky Convent

Ivanovo has always had the status of one of the largest centers of light industry in Russia. However, besides the production of good fabrics, there are other enterprises in the city. It produces modern drilling rigs, excavators and truck cranes.

In addition to industrial production, the city became famous for its educational institutions. The first women's gymnasium and the men's real school were built here in the 1870s. And now in Ivanovo, where about 409 thousand people live, more than ten universities have been opened.
